The Zero Contamination Project
With the rate of environmental and water pollution around the world, our water sources have never been the same again since the last decade. Environmental and water pollution are caused as a result of human activities such as urbanization, increasing agricultural practices, and bad sanitation and hygiene practices. Nowadays, water-borne diseases are a common phenomenon as there are frequent epidemic outbreaks every year particularly in local communities in Africa where most people do not see the need for water treatment.

Many believe their local community water sources are clean because they cannot see dust or sand particles mix with the water (high turbidity), some make a common statement, and I quote, "Black man no deh die because of dirty" which means that a black man cannot be killed by dirt. Others still believe that because their grand parents lived in the community and consumed the same water source without getting ill, it means that nothing is wrong with their water sources and so they do not see the importance of investing in carrying out regular water testing and environmental monitoring to check for possible routes of contamination.

The next factor is that most of the inhabitants live below the average lifestyle and they cannot even afford their basic needs. When such a community project comes up to improve their water quality and increase access to safe water, they do not get involved because of their native beliefs, as mentioned above, and lack of money.

Because of such ignorance and lack of the available resources to help improve their water sources over the years, it has lead to the death of 842, 000 people every year (WHO Africa) due to frequent epidemic outbreaks (water borne diseases), especially cholera and typhoid fever all over Africa and Cameroon inclusive. In such a case, the most vulnerable are usually the children and the elderly due to their weak immunity. On the part of children, the impact is devastating as this has hindered many from going to school due to ill health.

It is with this situation that the ekcolab team see the need to collaborate and work towards providing clean and safe water for all local communities, which will be offered as a help towards building and establishing a long-lasting cooperation with local communities in Africa so as to allow them to see the need to care for and safeguard their water sources and protect their environment.

This project aims at building water quality laboratories in specific localities in Cameroon and other parts of Africa which will be able to help run free water quality testing for community water sources and provide help in maintaining a better life and environment.
