Digital Awareness on WASH-The Water Lab Android Application Project

The "Water lab" android/IOS application is a product of ekcolab Research Organisation. This project was initiated by the leader of ekcolab "Ekolle N. Eya" in 2017. The name (Water lab) was co-named by the then members of the group by that time. The main reason why this project and the development of this android/IOS application was accepted by the team is because of it's use and help which it will bring to the common man in local communities in Africa as well as all over the world. "Water lab" is and educational application and it falls inline with Sustainable Development Goal No.4 because of its use.

 

The purpose is to create a global awareness on WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), teach people on practical skills using in solving water and environmental problems by reading articles and going through workshops training materials (text and videos). There is also quiz and grading sections to test the knowledge of users depending on the topics they chose to read. The teaching materials and videos are presented in the simplest written and spoken forms while the app is designed in a fancy and highly illustrative design.

 

This application is free and it is meant to serve, educate and train;

• School teachers (Nursery and Primary) that wish to teach little children on the best sanitation and hygiene practice for health lifestyle.

• Local community water leaders on the best methods and techniques to apply for management of their water sources, catchment protection, water treatment norms and procedure for community level. the importance for community engagement into water and environmental problem, fund raising strategies for community water development and how to plan an effective, reliable and efficient water distribution system depending on their geographical location.

• Non Governmental Organization workers on the best field practice need for emergency cases of epidermic outbreak related to water and also other environmental hazard control in communities.

• General public and create awareness on water borne diseases, their causes, effects and ways to prevent and create long lasting barriers towards a healthy community.

The App project has been under development and review for over 3 years now from when it was launched by the organisation. Till date the project is still not fully completed. short comings has been as a result of lack of finance to complete the project, lack of equipment such as computers for engineers developing the application and internet availability.

​

Next phase of the project is to provide digital devices (Android Phones and Tablets) for Nursery and primary school children with the possibility to install the Water lab application in the device from the time of development of the device. This is to help bring early awareness and knowledge, shaping the future generations for a more resilience community and creating young water and environmental advocates and leaders to corp or fight against water borne disease and global environmental problems.
